The Triplicities as Metaphors

A triplicity refers to a group of three astrological signs with the same elemental association. The fire triplicity, for instance, includes Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.

Fire

Fire is an element that embodies the qualities of raw energy and passion. This element is characterized by its upward movement, reaching towards the sky and beyond. The sun and stars, which are often considered the epitome of fire, are high in the sky and cannot be confined. While fire can be controlled, it has a tendency to eventually escape, much like the spirit and high ideals it is associated with.

Fire is both destructive and creative. On one hand, it consumes what it touches, but on the other hand, it creates new life, as is evident in the aftermath of a forest fire, where the old is removed to make way for the new. Some plants even wait for the fire to release their seeds in order to grow.

Of all the elements, fire tends to capture our attention the most. It embodies the archetypal qualities of being high above the earth, consuming, clinging, and captivating. It removes the old and creates the new.

The three zodiac signs associated with fire are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. These signs are known for their energetic and passionate nature, embodying the raw energy and dynamic qualities of fire.

Fiery individuals are known for their lively spirits, confidence, passion, and honesty. They exude a magnetic energy that is both invigorating and warm. They require ample room to express themselves and assert their own opinions. They become deeply invested in their pursuits and are driven by excitement, intuition, and sudden flashes of inspiration. As a result, they may act impulsively and without considering logic or practicality. At times, they may not fully understand their motivations but trust in the power of their intuition. Their bold and assertive nature often makes them natural leaders, but they can also be egocentric and fail to recognize the abilities of others. They seek recognition and appreciation, valuing this more than material wealth, and are easily hurt by being ignored. Their honesty is straightforward and often childlike, which can make them gullible, but it is also a hallmark of their open and approachable personality.

Fire emerges suddenly and captures the attention of everyone, forcing its way through obstacles and consuming everything in its path. The intense heat of fire can cause the evaporation of water and charring of earth and rocks, and in extreme cases, even melt them (lava).

Fire people are often assertive, independent, and active, valuing self-expression and freedom above all else. Their energetic and outgoing personalities can inspire others, but they can also be overpowering. Good-natured and social, they may have many friends and are generous with their time and resources. However, their strong sense of self can sometimes make them egoistic, failing to recognize the abilities of others. They believe in leading by example and often act without consulting others. Their mode of thought is intuitive and they may not always understand the reason behind their actions. They value recognition and appreciation over wealth and may be hurt by being ignored. Their honesty is direct and straightforward, sometimes leading to a child-like naivety or vulnerability to exploitation by others.

Earth

The earth triplicity encompasses the zodiac signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Earth is characterized by its stability, rigidity, and tangible nature. It is the foundation of all things and represents practicality, organization, and predictability. Earth signs value security, stability, and material possessions, as they believe in the tangible and attainable. They are grounded, disciplined, and hardworking, often prioritizing practical matters over abstract ideas.

The earth element, embodied by the zodiac signs Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, is defined by its solidity and stability. It provides a firm foundation for existence, and its tangible qualities make it capable of being owned and possessed. However, this very stability can also be limiting, as it makes earth people cautious about extending too far beyond their comfort zone. Unlike fire, water, and air, earth cannot easily dissipate or disappear, but if it turns to dust, it has the potential to soar to great heights. This transformation requires letting go of its structured and organized nature.

People who embody the earth element are known for their caution, practicality, and dependability. They value stability and physical wellbeing over spiritual enlightenment and prefer to live in a grounded and down-to-earth manner. Earth types are realistic and hardworking, taking pride in their ability to build and manage things efficiently and effectively.

In contrast to the free-spirited and innovative nature of the fire element, earth people are more conventional and focused on practical, observable results. They are reductionist in their approach to life, seeking to simplify and understand things through their physical and practical aspects. They excel in business, particularly in established industries, where their stability, attention to detail, and focus on results are highly valued.

However, earth people can also be rigid in their adherence to rules, regulations, and procedures. They may lack imagination and struggle to think beyond the physical realm, focusing solely on what is real and observable. Despite this, their dependability, practicality, and focus on physical wellbeing make them well suited for life on earth and successful in a variety of endeavors.

Air

The air, though light, permeates everything on earth, reaching far into the sky and even into the depths of caves. It is omnipresent and links everything together. The zodiac signs of the air triplicity are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.

Although air rises, it does not rise as much as fire and is challenging to control or contain. It is nearly always free and is associated with language and communication. Speech requires air, and language is characterized by a serial quality, as words must be spoken in a specific sequence to make sense. This serial quality underlies the basis of logic in language.

Throughout much of human history, air was a crucial force in transportation, powering sailing ships, and in harnessing energy from windmills.

Archetypally, air represents language, logic, communication, transportation, freedom, and the relationships between people and things. If captured, air will always strive to escape, whether it is contained in a balloon or not.

In order to connect ideas, we rely on abstract thinking and generalization. Air shares this abstract quality with fire, but being closer to the earth, it is less likely to be as far removed from reality as fire. Air is present everywhere, but retains its own nature, even as it interacts with objects in the world. Although air is everywhere and has social connections, they are not as deep or long-lasting as those of water or earth. The archetypal air represents objective, somewhat impersonal aspects of communication, transportation, language, and logic.

The element of air is associated with thought, ideas, and intellect. People with an archetypal air influence are known for their detachment and objectivity, as well as their versatility and agility in communication. They are often concerned with theory and abstract concepts, which can sometimes result in a lack of practicality.

However, air people are known for their logical and reflective nature, and they think things through before they implement their ideas. They are fair-minded and consider other people’s viewpoints, making them great group-oriented individuals, who love humanity but might not have deep connections with individuals.

While air people can be procrastinators, they are less likely to make mistakes due to a lack of thought. They are not particularly emotional, and their lack of strong emotional ties can sometimes make them seem impersonal. However, this also allows them to approach situations objectively and make fair decisions.

Air people are known for their varied interests and could become perpetual students, always seeking to learn and expand their knowledge. However, to accomplish their goals, they need to be grounded in earth and have a practical approach to implementation. They are the theorists in the “theory vs practice” debate, and while they are less practical than earth signs, they are more practical and objective than water and fire signs.

Water

Water is a heavy element, much like earth, and tends to fall towards the ground. However, it is more fluid than earth and less easily contained than fire or air. Despite its weight, it has the ability to rise into the air, often in the form of steam or clouds, but usually returns to the ground as precipitation. In contrast to the ethereal nature of fire and air, water has a tangible form and retains its volume. It is the universal solvent, capable of unifying without destroying. While air can cause water to rise, water generally moves downward and seeks its own level. When artificially confined at high elevations, water has the power to break free and fall.

Water is reflective and impressionable, capable of going deep and reflecting the emotions and unconscious mind. It is more sensitive than other elements, able to exist in solid, liquid, and gas forms. This adaptability allows it to take on characteristics of earth and air, making it a versatile element.

Water people are often known for their strong emotional intelligence and their ability to deeply connect with their feelings and the feelings of others. They are more likely to trust their instincts and make decisions based on what feels right, rather than relying solely on practicality or logic. This sensitivity and emotional nature can be both a strength and a weakness, as it allows them to experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Water also plays a crucial role in the natural world, rising up into the air and falling as rain to nourish the earth, which in turn provides life-sustaining resources for all living things. Similarly, water people tend to seek close, nurturing relationships and can be very affectionate and caring with their loved ones. They may also have a strong desire for stability in their personal relationships and can be very possessive.

Water people often have a strong appreciation for the arts, such as music, poetry, photography, and dance, as these forms of expression allow them to communicate emotions in a non-verbal way. They may also be drawn to spiritual or intuitive practices, and their beliefs and values are often rooted in feelings and emotions rather than practical considerations. However, this emotional nature can sometimes lead to impulsiveness, and they may struggle with decision making that requires a more rational approach.

Ether

Ether refers to the unseen connection between the physical world and the spiritual realm. It is represented by the Nodes of the Moon and is not a recognized element in traditional systems. Ether acts as a bridge, facilitating the exchange and interaction between the material and spiritual realms.
